About St John's
PARISH SNAPSHOT
The official parish list has about 130 individual and family
entries. The congregation draws from the greater Adelaide metropolitan
area and includes a growing number of inner city residents. Parishioners
come from a wide variety of ages and backgrounds. Many take a
lively interest in community and social issues.
The Anglican community of the Society of the Sacred Mission
(SSM) makes its South Australian home at St John's Priory and
provides the Priest in Charge (Fr Christopher Myers). The parish
also has the consistent support of additional clergy, including
members of the SSM, other Anglicans and members of other denominations.
The Statement of Parish Directions, regularly reviewed by members
of the congregation, stresses living by Christ's teaching in daily
life, respecting and helping each other and others, and growing
spiritually. (A copy of the full Statement can be obtained by
contacting the parish office.)

LITURGY
The liturgy, or form of worship, features both the ceremony
of the traditional Anglican church and contemporary relevance.
Sermons are typically both affirming of faith and intellectually
stimulating.

MUSIC
For information about St John's organs and piano
take the Tour.
Music is an integral part of life at St John's.
We have our own choir which practises weekly. Everyone who enjoys
singing is welcome to come.
Two other choirs are also based here. The Corinthian Singers
has a wide repertoire of classical and contemporary music, and
the Quire St Nicolas specialises in religious music. Both perform
at special services during the year.
At Christmas time a participatory People's Messiah is widely
popular.
Because of the church's excellent acoustics, St John's also hosts
a variety of choral and instrumental concerts during the year.
For information about these go to the Services and Events page.
SAFE MINISTRY
The Parish has adopted the Safe Ministry practices of the Anglican
Diocese of Adelaide.
HELPING OTHERS IN NEED
- St
John's
Youth Services, founded by the parish,
provides temporary housing for homeless young people between
16 and 25. Parishioners now contribute through fund-raising
and serving on the St John's Youth Services Board.
- The
Magdalene
Centre in Moore Street, Adelaide, which provides
support, training and emergency provisions for needy and marginalised
families in the city, was founded by the parishes of St John's,
St Peter's Cathedral and St Mary Magdalene's. St John's parishioners
continue to contribute as fund-raisers, as volunteers at the
Centre and on the Board.
- Pastoral care. Our Hospital Visitors regularly
visit Anglican and other patients on request at St
Andrew's Hospital in nearby South Terrace. They can
arrange for a priest to give Communion. Training is available
for interested parishioners.
- Australian
Board of Missions. We currently raise funds towards
the expenses of
Bishop
James Leftwich, Aboriginal Bishop of Australia
who is based in Cairns but travels Australia-wide ministering
to Aborigines. Our main fund-raising event is the annual ABM
dinner.
